Thursday 11th October 2018 – Sunday 14th October 2018

Hi all,

It’s a warm one today. In fact it will be the warmest October day I have ever recorded, as southerly winds push up air all the way from Africa with plenty of sunshine on offer. It’s like we have turned the clock back to summer. UV levels are now low, so you won’t be getting a tan from today’s sunshine and of course it’s too good to last.

Thursday: Cloudy with any morning light rain clearing to sunny spells. Cloud thickening late-afternoon bringing showery rain and becoming breezy. Cooler. Max 18°C

Friday: Windy with 35mph gusts and showery rain for the morning. The afternoon and into the evening will see heavier and more prolonged rain arrive from the southwest and remaining windy. A much different feel to the weather compared to 48 hours ago. Max 16°C

Weekend: Improving on Sunday

Currently there are some weather warnings for the rain Friday/Saturday but they are not covering our region. Of course updates will be posted on Twitter if this changes.

Saturday: Cloudy with some rain at times. Some uncertainty on how heavy and prolonged this rainfall will be as the position of the weather front is still not set in stone. It looks like it might sit to our north, therefore the worst of the weather could be across the Lake District and north Lancashire. Certainly one to watch. Feeling muggy despite the breeze and rain. Max 18°C

Sunday: Any leftover rain will clear to leave a much better day with plenty of sunny spells and drier conditions. Lighter winds too. Fresher though. Max 13°C

Outlook: Next week sees what’s left of Hurricane Michael get picked up in the Jet Stream, as a normal low pressure, which could bring us a spell of wet and windy weather, mainly to the northwest of the UK. The media will be all over it but I can not see any issues affecting us. Otherwise, bright spells and showers next week with temperatures around normal, 12-14°C.

Thursday 4th October 2018 – Sunday 7th October 2018

Hi all,

Autumn is well and truly here after some frosty mornings and a chill in the air. There is still a chance of an Indian Summer but time is running out and everything points towards October being slightly cooler than average.

Thursday – Bright spells and remaining dry. Breezy at times but coming from a warm direction. Max 16°C

Friday – Mostly cloudy but it should remain dry for the morning. Still quite mild but a little cooler as patchy rain arrives into the afternoon and late-evening. Max 14°C

Weekend – Sunday looks the best day.

Saturday – Rain lingering for most of the day and feeling cold. Some uncertainty on how heavy the rain gets. A fresh breeze from the north. Max 9°C

Sunday – A chilly start, perhaps a touch of ground-frost then a decent day with plenty of sunny spells and lighter winds. Less cold and dry. Max 13°C

Outlook – Changeable. Breezy with spells of rain at times but days of sunny spells in between. Most of the rain to the northwest. Temperatures around average.

Thursday 27th September 2018 – Sunday 30th September 2018

Hi all,

Official Autumn is now here and there were a few chilly days earlier this week. Monday morning started with a widespread ground-frost. Lows of 3°C were recorded and grass temperatures dropped to below freezing, -0.5°C. Still time for an Indian Summer but nothing in the immediate forecast.

Thursday: A cloudy morning but remaining dry. After a few warmer days, cooler air is on the way. Once this cloud clears later to a few sunny spells, that cooler airmass will arrive. Max 16°C

Friday: A fresh start and certainly a different feel to the weather with a northerly airflow. That said, a decent day ahead with plenty of sunshine and light winds. Max 13°C

Weekend: Mostly dry but cool.

Saturday and Sunday: Pretty much similar days. Plenty of cloud but some brightness at times, especially in eastern parts. Also, a little breezy and from a cool northwesterly direction. Remaining dry though, with high pressure close by. Max 12-13°C

Outlook: High pressure staying in charge and anchored to the west of the UK. This means north to northwesterly winds will flow across the region. Remaining cool with bright spells. Any thicker cloud could produce some drizzle, especially over the hills. Any clear spells overnight leading to localised ground-frost and misty mornings.

Thursday 20th September 2018 – Sunday 23rd September 2018

Hi all,

So Autumn isn’t messing about. First the leftovers from ex-Hurricane Helene then Storm Ali. There is a chance we could see Storm Bronagh bring some stormy conditions to England and Wales this Sunday, assuming another storm isn’t named on Thursday night into Friday as then it would be Storm Callum. It’s all go at the moment.

Thursday: A cloudy start and briefly dry. Some patchy rain or drizzle will develop towards lunch. Into the afternoon the rain will really set in and become heavy and persistent lasting for the rest of the day. Localised flooding possible with some areas seeing up to two inches of rain. Yellow warning in place. Max 14°C

We could see another windy spell overnight into Friday. Another yellow warning is in place.

Friday: Much cooler and fresher with strong west to northwesterly winds bringing frequent beefy showers. Possible hail and thunder. Max 13°C

Weekend: Saturday the calm before the storm?

Saturday: A brief ridge of high pressure with bring a calmer and drier day with bright spells. Thicker cloud during the evening bringing some light rain. Max 14°C

Sunday: Still uncertainty over this day. At the moment rain will spread in from the southwest and winds will freshen. Showers and brighter conditions later. If an area of low pressure develops, it could well be deep and with it bring very windy conditions. Yellow warning, at this moment, is in place. There is still chance that the low doesn’t develop and the rain stays away to our south. Watch this space. Max 14°C

Sunday’s warning has been issued early but remains uncertain

Outlook: Wind and rain clears early on Monday then the week should settle down with plenty of drier weather and sunny spells. Maximum temperatures in the early-teens so some chilly nights with a local ground frost in rural spots.

Hi all,

I’ve been working on some statistics for our Summers since 2013. Here are a few charts to compare 2018 to previous years. It shows how dry and warm Summer 2018 was.

Weather Analysis – Summers 2013-2018

I’ve been on a few walks recently to some of our local reservoirs/lakes. They are really low on water. Not surprising as Summer 2018 only had 43% of the average rainfall.

On to the forecast….

Thursday: A fresh westerly breeze. A bright start with some good spells of sunshine. Cloud increasing with just the chance of a shower or two later. Max 16°C

Friday: Mostly cloudy but dry to start. Rain pushing in from the west during the afternoon, turning showery later. Breezy. Max 15°C

Weekend: Some rain, mostly on Sunday morning.

Saturday: Bright spells for most of the day. Cloud thickening later with some rain likely overnight. Max 16°C

Sunday: Rain to start which will push away to the south-east into the afternoon. Brighter and hopefully sunnier skies to follow for the afternoon, leading to a nice end to the weekend. There is some uncertainty about the morning rain and how quickly it moves away so if you have anything planned, watch out for updates. Max 17°C 

Outlook: Becoming warmer into the early part of next week with some sunny spells and we might sneak back up to 20°C. From midweek a risk of rain returns from the west as the Jet Stream becomes lively again and temperatures will become cooler.

Hi all,

Well that’s it, summer is over. And although August was a little disappointing sunshine-wise, it was a fantastic summer. The Met Office confirmed this week that England had its hottest summer ever! It was also very dry with all months bringing us below average rainfall. I will get round to producing some stats for Summer 2018 and compare it to previous years. My guess is September will be about average. Our reservoirs certainly need rain.

Thursday: It looks like low pressure will develop and take control of our weather for a few days. So, after early sunshine we can expect showers developing,  some heavy and cooler. Max 15°C

Friday: Cloudy with some sunny spells. Initially it looked like a very wet day but the thoughts are that we will escape the rain (it will be to our north-east) for most of the day. Showers arriving late-evening and overnight. Max 15°C

Weekend: Sunday looks best.

Saturday: Showery rain during the morning clearing leading to some bright spells later on. Max 16°C

Sunday: The low will start to fill allowing some drier weather to take hold. Still a risk of showers but mainly to our north-west and especially in the morning. Feeling a little warmer with sunny spells. Max 18°C

Outlook: Breezy with rain in north-western parts of the UK. Drier and sunnier to the south-east. We’re sandwiched in between so drifting in and out of both conditions. Temperatures about average.

Hi all,

August will be another month with below average rainfall (about 60% of normal). We have also lacked sunshine this month and temperatures have been pegged back for most of the time. Our average maximum temperature for August 2018, sits at 18.9°C, 0.6°C below the expected average. Will the first month of Autumn fair any better?

Thursday: Sunny spells to start then cloud bubbling up and becoming cloudy for most of the day. Dry. Max 18°C

Friday: Not much different to yesterday. Sunny spells with cloud developing. Dry again. Quite warm especially in any afternoon bright spells. Max 19°C

Weekend: Quite a lot of cloud but becoming warmer.

Saturday: Cloudy to start with some localised patchy rain. This will ease away leading to bright spells later. Warm. Max 20°C

Sunday: Mostly cloudy with some light rain or drizzle. Hopefully this will break up later leading to some very warm spells of sunshine or brightness. Max 22°C

High pressure takes charge during the first few days of September

Outlook: High pressure will eventually build, it’s been trying to do this for a good while. So expect plenty of sunny spells and dry weather. Pleasant daytime temperatures to be had too.

Thursday 23rd August 2018 – Bank Holiday Monday 27th August 2018

Hi all,

The coats are coming back out and there are only 9 days left of meteorological summer! Autumn is just around the corner! But, will we see another hot spell? I’m sure we will, but perhaps not until late-September or even an Indian Summer will lead to our last BBQ of 2018!

Thursday:  A cooler airmass has replaced the muggy and humid air that was in place earlier in the week. Bright spells and some blustery showers, especially later. Feeling much cooler. Max 17°C

Friday:  A northwesterly breeze feeding in some heavy showers, with a risk of hail or thunder and lightning. These most frequent into the afternoon and evening. Windy and feeling cold. Max 14°C

Chilly Nights

Some chilly nights this weekend as temperatures take a dip

Weekend: Not too bad but temperatures below average.

Saturday: Any early morning showery rain clears, skies will brighten and a lot of sunny spells will develop and remaining dry. A fresh feel and breezy. A cold night to follow as skies clear. Max 17°C

Sunday: Looks dry with variable amounts of cloud with bright or sunny spells. Rain overnight. Max 17°C

Bank Holiday Monday: Patchy rain or showers moving from west to east. Brighter later. Max 18°C

Outlook: High pressure building from the southwest. Dry with sunny spells and warmer with temperatures eventually back into the 20s (just).

Thursday 16th August 2018 – Sunday 19th August 2018

Hi all,

Where has summer gone? Will the heat and sunshine return anytime soon? Only 17 days until Autumn is here.

Thursday:  Any early rain will clear to much brighter skies but breezy and feeling fresher as winds swing to a west-northwesterly. It should be mostly dry with sunny spells and just the odd scattered shower, so all-in-all not a bad day at all. Max 18°C

Friday:  Mostly dry and cloudy with a brisk south-west breeze. Some showery rain late-evening and overnight. Max 18°C

Weekend: Mostly cloudy, muggy and breezy with rain on Sunday.

Saturday: Some sunny spells but again the focus is more on cloudy skies and breezy. Feeling slightly warmer and a bit muggy. Max 20°C

Sunday:  Cloudy with rain at times slowly easing later in the day. Breezy. Max 20°C

Outlook: Very little change until midweek when hopefully (didn’t happen this week), high pressure will build in from the southwest bringing more in the way of sunshine and temperatures just into the 20s but it might only last a few days. The wait for another heatwave and clear blue skies continues. The next one could well be an Indian Summer.

Perhaps high pressure will be more in control towards the end of the month

Hi all,

Make the most of Thursday’s sunshine, as the weather will turn unsettled with some more welcome rain this weekend. On the bright side, the outlook is promising.

Thursday: A decent day with plenty of sunny spells. Dry throughout and UV levels still quite high so don’t forget sun-cream. Max 20°C

Friday: Bright spells with heavy and possibly thundery showers, which will ease towards evening. Cooler. Max 17°C

Weekend: Dry and bright start then unsettled.

Low pressure in charge this weekend bringing rain or showers

Saturday: The morning should be dry with sunny spells. Becoming breezy from lunchtime with cloud thickening to bring some rain into the afternoon, or if we are lucky, not until the evening. A little humid. Max 19°C

Sunday: Humid and quite warm despite the mostly cloudy skies. Some rain at first which should become showery and ease away into the late-afternoon. Max 22°C

Outlook: Showery rain at first, but from midweek the weather should settle down, with high pressure building from the south-west. Temperatures around 19-21°C.
