After two weeks off, COVID and a holiday to sunny Bognor Regis, the weekly blog is back. I wish I was the bearer of good news, a late summery burst of warmth and sunshine, but unfortunately not. The difference this week between the NW of England and the SE of England was again plain to see. Temperatures into the mid-20s down there, and although we did see temperatures into the early-20s we continued to see rainfall.

Thursday: Low pressure to the north of the UK. Overall it will be cooler with sunny spells and a few showers once a band of cloud and some rain moves south-east. A little breezy. That said, it will still be pleasant in any sunshine later. Max 18°C Min 11°C

Friday: Sunny spells and showers. A breeze, notably from the north-west or north introducing fresher air. Temperatures not much different but dew point values will drop making it feel cooler at night. Max 17°C Min 8°C

Weekend: Plenty of brightness but showers still present.

Saturday: The low pressure will drift away to the east, ever so slowly, and with high pressure to the west this will kill off some of the showers, especially later, but they will still be around with the odd heavy one. Sunny spells in between. Max 17°C Min 9°C

Sunday: More in the way of cloud with a few showers. Temperatures down a little. Max 16°C Min 10°C

Bank Holiday Monday: A dry morning and hopefully we hold onto this into the early-afternoon before cloud thickens and light rain/drizzle arrives on a milder airflow. Max 17°C Min 11°C

Outlook: Little change. No late summer heat, mostly cloudy with showers. Next weekend could see more in the way of sunshine with a brief area/ridge of high pressure but don’t hold your breath. Indian Summer anyone?

Good riddance to July. What a truly dreadful month. The stats say it all.

Preston managed 302% of the July average rainfall whereas for us it was 232%. It was more like Autumn with numerous areas of low pressure powered by the Jet Stream and this is clearly shown with the average pressure reading.

Thursday: The low that brought Wednesday’s rain will have moved away to the east allowing a cooler N-to-NW’ly airflow develop across the region. This will drag down some scattered showers, some heavy. Windy at times with sunny spells in between. Max 18°C Min 11°C

Friday: A similar day but with slightly less windy conditions and showers eventually fading and being confined to eastern parts. Max 17°C Min 10°C

Weekend: Details a little uncertain.

Saturday: It was looking like another wet weekend day with low pressure arriving, but, the latest suggests that this will now slip south of us. Therefore the current thinking is bright spells and thundery showers and particularly cool and windy. With details uncertain for Saturday, look out for updates on Twitter. Max 14°C Min 9°C

Sunday: A strong and gusty westerly wind transporting in another scattering of showers, perhaps heavy with hail and thunder. Max 16°C Min 11°C

Outlook: The first few days sees little change but then signs are there for high pressure to build in the Atlantic then move across the UK. This will bring drier and sunnier conditions, something we haven’t seen for a long time. The issue is, this looks like it will only last 3-4 days at best before we return to an unsettled theme. That said, sometimes a high pressure can really build and lock itself upon us for a while, so fingers crossed we see something we can call summer again. Depending on how long the high can last and what direction the wind flows from, will determine how warm we’ll get. Watch this space.

Just a quick blog this week as I’ve had some welcome family time today, so I’ve been pushed for time. The dire weather has continued since the last weekly blog and especially so at the weekend which became a washout for some for the full 48 hours. 100mm of rain was recorded in north Lancashire and we managed a good 2 inches of rain at least. We are well over the average for rainfall amounts for July and we could end up at 200% come the 31st. It can only get better, right?

Thursday: Cloudy with a few showers, some heavy, especially early on. Tending to become a little drier and brighter later in the day. Breezy and a touch humid. Warm in any sunshine. Max 20°C Min 14°C

Friday: Low pressure approaching. Mostly cloudy with a few scattered showers into the afternoon but most could stay dry. Quite muggy. A warm night. Max 20°C Min 15°C

Weekend: Unsettled and a little fresher but not as wet as last weekend.

Saturday: Low pressure will once again drive our weather. Some bright spells and showers, some heavy and perhaps thundery. Windy. Max 19°C Min 13°C

Sunday: If anything it will be windier with more in the way of hefty showers. Again, these could be thundery. Locally gusting to 30mph. Max 18°C Min 14°C

Outlook: I wish I had good news but no. The first few days of the week look to remain showery with low pressures around and this is a favourable forecast for later in the week as well. There are slight hints of something more drier and settled as we enter week 2 of August, which I have hinted at (just a guess) for a week or so now. So fingers crossed we finally, albeit 2 or so weeks away, get out of the autumnal feel. That said it’ll be autumn soon!

As per last week; what a poor month it’s turning out to be. Today hasn’t been too bad and Thursday won’t be either, so make the most of it as the weekend looks grim.

If you do follow my weather data online or at my sister account, @OldhamWxStats on Twitter, you will have noticed, especially at night and when it’s raining, that the humidity levels are very low and the dew point values are well below freezing. The humidity sensor is broken, or letting in moisture. The weather station is on my roof so I can’t access it until, hopefully, this Friday.

Thursday: Bright or sunny spells with the odd passing shower on the north-westerly breeze. Clear spells overnight leading to a chilly one. Max 19°C Min 10°C

Friday: Bright spells fading quickly as cloud increases from the west with rain/showers arriving. Mild and turning even wetter overnight. Max 16°C Min 12°C

Weekend: Unsettled once again and turning humid.

Saturday: Cloudy with rain at times, some heavy and breezy. Feeling cool. Poor day. Max 16°C Min 12°C

Sunday: Low pressure will move away into the North Sea but leave an area of rain which will slowly move away to the south. Staying cloudy with showers continuing into the afternoon. Muggy and not as cool as Saturday. Max 19°C Min 12°C

Outlook: Continuing unseasonably cool, with maximum temperatures into the late-teens. Showers or spells of rain at times. Thundery showers can’t be ruled out. If you’re hoping for Summer to return, then, even though we take it as a pinch of salt this far out, the pattern across Europe should change. This means it’s likely to be favourable for us to see some settled, drier, sunnier and much warmer weather towards mid-August. We live in hope.

June could well be our summer! July continues to be below-par. Let’s not be complaining though, as our summer is normally a week in May followed by another in September 😀.

June was decent but when will any of that summery weather return? I’m looking on the horizon and there’s no sign of it and we could be waiting a while. I can’t see anything happening in July now. August awaits.

Thursday: Bright spells but again there will be some scattered showers which should become confined to the south later in the day. Max 18°C Min 13°C

Friday: Take advantage of the dry morning which will dawn bright then cloud increases. Weather going downhill after lunch with rain arriving and becoming persistent and perhaps with a rumble of thunder thrown in. Winds picking up, especially into the evening and overnight. Quite a humid night. Max 16°C Min 13°C

Weekend: Low pressure in control bringing plenty of showers.

Saturday: Blustery with frequent hefty showers, risk of hail and thunder. Some brighter periods in between. Max 17°C Min 12°C

Sunday: Rinse and repeat and with more of a westerly we could see some showers merging at times. Windy and disappointingly cool. Max 16°C Min 11°C

Outlook: Look away now. Little change. Some drier and brighter interludes but generally the Jet Stream will bring spells of rain or showers and temperatures below average and struggling to get to 20°C. No sign of June’s glorious weather returning. What a poor month July has been.

Hi all,

June, UK-wise, is set to be the warmest (hottest!) on record despite the month ending with temperatures down and fresher days around. I’ll post some statistics next week to see how it fairs locally to the previous Junes.

There are winners and losers when it’s hot and humid. Some of you love it but personally it’s too much, especially when trying to sleep. So I’m grateful of the recent fresher conditions, although some days have still been muggy despite the cloud and drizzle. I do miss the sun however and that’s making a return on Thursday.

There isn’t any sign over the next two weeks of a heatwave returning, but, long-term model runs suggest a warming mid-July; but of course we take that with a pinch of salt at this range. Meanwhile, next week will see the Jet Stream bringing weather systems in off the Atlantic so rain will be around at times.

Remember, when sunny, the UV levels are still HIGH or VERY HIGH.

Thursday: A fresh start but a sunny one. Fair-weather cloud will bubble up during the day with just the low risk of an isolated shower. Quite breezy and feeling fresher after a couple of days of muggy air. Max 18°C Min 10°C

Friday: Bright start then cloud will once again thicken and spread in from the west. Patchy drizzle is likely later in the afternoon with patchy rain arriving into the evening. Turning reasonably humid once again, therefore a warm night. Max 18°C Min 15°C

Weekend: Low pressure drives the weather.

Saturday: Low pressure will bring a day of bright spells and showers. It will be windy with 30mph gusts. Later in the day there could well be a more prolonged spell of rain. Fresher. Max 18°C Min 12°C

Sunday: Windy once more, locally gusting to 35mph. Mostly cloudy with the odd shower. Max 17°C Min 12°C

Outlook: Little change into the start of the week and that looks to be the norm for the first 10 days of July; windy, showery and temperatures about average or below. There is some support in the models for the latter part of the 2nd week of July to turn very warm or hot once again. This is certainly not set in stone and as always subject to change at this range but as you’ve seen it’s prompted the media to start posting about 40°C and days upon days of a heatwave. This for now, is nothing but clickbait.

Despite the heatwave ending it’s stayed quite humid at times and temperatures have remained into the 20s with some very warm sunny spells; but importantly, we’ve had some welcome rainfall, with some areas seeing up to 2 inches from the torrential thundery downpours.

One particularly notable thunderstorm pushed through the region during the early hours of Sunday morning, which produced some superb thunderbolts.

Thursday: A cloudy start then some very warm sunny spells will break through. Clouds will bubble up and there will be a thundery shower or two, more so in eastern parts. Temperatures up a notch on Wednesday. Warm night ahead. Max 24°C Min 16°C

Friday: We introduce some moisture on Friday as a weather-front, albeit weakening, comes in from the west. So a mostly cloudy day after a bright start. Some light rain possible, but most look dry, a little breezy and we ramp up the humidity. A very muggy night to come despite the day being cooler on the thermometer. Max 22°C Min 17°C

Weekend: Very warm & humid. Thundery Sunday afternoon?

Saturday: A cloudy start is expected but cloud should break and sunny spells appear from the south. Temperatures will rocket and it will feel very warm to hot. There will be a refreshing and often gusty wind. Another uncomfortable night for sleeping. Max 25°C Min 17°C

Sunday: Breezy but a mostly sunny morning. Cloud is expected to increase into the afternoon with showers breaking out as another weather-front comes in from the west. A bit more of a kick to this one, so some lively showers/thunderstorms could be on the cards. A little cooler, eventually. Max 23°C Min 14°C

Outlook: High pressure to our south-west and low pressure to our north-west looks the likely set-up meaning we will pick up a westerly airflow, perhaps north-westerly at times, allowing maximum temperatures to slip away to around 20°C. Winds will be quite gusty. Bright or sunny spells expected as well as a few showers, which could be beefy.

More prolonged spells of rain are possible later in the week as the Jet Stream takes control of our weather. Thankfully it won’t be anywhere near as muggy, which will be especially noticeable at night.

It’s now 20 days without measurable rainfall and any rainfall expected over the next ten days will come in the form of showers, which can be very localised, so that count will continue for some. Our weather is changing as we enter the weekend and you’ll certainly feel the difference, especially at night.

HIGH UV levels (7-8) through the forecast….

Thursday: Early cloud will again take time to clear away from west to east. Some sunny spells into the afternoon and still that steady north-easterly breeze. Max 19°C Min 8°C

Friday: Plenty of sunshine on offer again with a breeze but it will again start cloudy. Starting to feel a little more humid later. Becoming windier with 30mph gusts, as the isobars tighten, signalling change. Max 21°C Min 9°C

Weekend: Muggy with the risk of thunderstorms. Warmer nights noticeable.

Saturday: The recent high pressure will now have slipped away to the north-east and allow low pressure to push a little closer to the UK. This will also bring us a south-easterly/southerly airflow and introduce a much different feel to the weather, especially at night as the humidity rises. Sunny spells for the morning with cloud bubbling up into the late-afternoon and evening as thundery showers pose a risk from the south-west. Breezy. Max 25°C Min 14°C

Sunday: Bright spells and scattered thunderstorms. Muggy and not the best for sleeping . Max 24°C Min 15°C

Outlook: Staying warm, temperatures nicely into the 20s, with some sunny spells but with slightly instable air still in place, showers, thundery at times, are possible, but these will be hit-and-miss.
