Hi all,

Meteorological Summer is done and the statistics on how it compared to previous summers will be published later this week. Some hot days in there but also plenty of rain and reasonably breezy.

Thursday: A mild start and cloudy with some patchy rain. Sunny spells developing during the day with just the odd shower. Breezy but warm. Max 19°C

Friday: Not a bad day with bright or sunny spells. Breezy and the odd passing shower. A little cooler. Max 17°C

Weekend: Some showers.

Saturday: Breezy with bright spells and a few showers coming in on the west-to-northwest wind. Feeling a little cool at times. Max 16°C

Sunday: Little change, bright spells, passing showers and breezy. Max 17°C

Outlook: High pressure to our southwest so generally settled for a few days with quite cloudy skies. Some bright spells and mostly dry. No sign of any early-Autumn warmth or chill.

Chilly Nights as Autumn looms – Thursday 27th August 2020 – Sunday 30th August 2020

Hi all,

Storm Ellen then Storm Francis and we are still in a summer month! The most recent storm brought some damage to trees, although it wasn’t as windy as it could have been. The main feature of Francis was the rain. Locally, over 2 inches of rainfall was recorded with 45mm at Chadderton HQ.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy after any morning brightness fades. Showery rain already affecting the west will move slowly and erratically east. Max 17°C

Friday: Again cloudy with showers then more general rain arrives from the north-east with the wind picking up and becoming gusty. Turning cooler overnight. Max 16°C

Weekend: Fresh but bright with cold nights.

Saturday: Windy and noticeable as the air feeds in from the chilly north-east. Any showers fading to a day of sunny spells. Winds falling light overnight and turning cold. Rurally close to a ground-frost (4°C). Max 15°C

Sunday: Fresh to begin the day then decent enough. Sunny spells with light winds and clouding over later in the day. Another cold night. Max 16°C

More details on the Bank Holiday Monday later this week.

Outlook: Remaining below average temperatures with days alternating from sunny spells to spells of showers. Odd windy day too.

Storm Ellen – Thursday 20th August 2020 – Sunday 23rd August 2020

Hi all,

It’s my youngest 6th birthday today, so it’s been a busy one with a trip to Chester Zoo in the pouring rain. So, a short and sweet blog this week with time limited. The Irish Met Office named Storm Ellen this week, which will bring some disruptive winds to the UK.

Thursday: A lovely day, albeit windy. Sunshine from the word go and with winds strengthening from a southerly direction it will turn out very warm. Dry throughout. Rain overnight. Windy with 25-35mph gusts. Max 22°C

Friday: Early rain will move away to the north to leave a day of sunshine and showers, some heavy. Storm Ellen will have decayed now but a new low pressure that joined with Storm Ellen will have formed and will produce strong and gusty southwesterly winds. Warning in place for 40-50mph gusts, and possibly up to 60mph in exposed places and especially during showers. A little cooler. Max 20°C

Weekend: Winds slowly easing.

Saturday: Windy with sunshine and showers once again. Fresher. Max 18°C

Sunday: Looks the better of the weekend days. Bright spells and mostly dry with any morning showers fading. Winds becoming lighter. Max 17°C

Outlook: Sunny spells and showers for a few days then hopefully a couple of settled days before next weekend turns unsettled again.

Heatwave to end – Thursday 13th August 2020 – Sunday 16th August 2020

August didn’t start well but it certainly heated up and felt a lot more like summer even with the localised thundery downpours. Most people to the southeast of the Midlands, have been having a heatwave for over a week now. We only hit heatwave status on Monday as we touched the 25°C threshold and remained in that for the two days that followed, but it is now coming to an end. It’s been far too humid for my liking (head is pounding) and even though it will be getting cooler, it will still be quite muggy.

**Don’t forget your sun-cream – UV levels still high**

Thursday: It’s looking a slightly cloudy start, especially in the east, with sunny spells developing during the day. Less hot and a nice breeze developing. It’s looking mostly dry with the risk of thunderstorms quite low, but never say never. Max 25°C

Friday: Cloud will spill in from the east but will slowly break up during the day. Bright or sunny spells best in the west. Again, a small risk of a thunderstorm but it’s looking mostly dry. Humid and a little cooler. Max 23°C

Weekend: Scattered showers and a touch humid.

Saturday: A lot of cloud-cover but a few bright spells will sneak through. Generally a drier picture but isolated showers can’t be ruled out. Max 21°C

Sunday: Sunshine and showers, again some thundery, with the chance of showers more likely than yesterday. Max 20°C

Outlook: Bright or sunny spells and with mostly light winds the showers will be slow-moving. Temperatures back to average (18-20°C).

August tends to be a bit of a mixed month and it started to form. Good news – temperatures are set to rise and with it sunnier skies and a drier spell of weather to enjoy but a return to mixed conditions on the horizon?

**UV levels still high (7) so don’t forget sun-cream on your days outside**

Thursday: Mostly cloudy with warm bright spells developing later in the day but this might not be until evening for some of us. Muggy. Max 22°C

Friday: Second sweaty Friday in a row. Hot with sunny spells. Feeling humid. Perhaps a little less hot further west. Max 27°C

Weekend: Decent, plenty of sunny spells to go round and pleasantly warm.

Saturday: A cold front will have moved through so not as hot but still warm with sunny spells developing after a cloudy start. Dry and feeling very warm in the August sunshine. Max 22°C

Sunday: Sunny spells and warm but becoming windy introducing a steady east or northeasterly wind which will be gusty as it comes over the Pennines. Dry. Max 21°C

Outlook: Remaining warm (even very warm) with temperatures into the 20s but becoming a little unstable with a risk of showers or even thunderstorms towards midweek.

Steamy End to Month – Thursday 30th July 2020 – Sunday 2nd August 2020

July has been particularly poor on the temperature front and not great when it comes to dry weather either, but the month is going to end with some heat and humidity wafting up from Spain.

Here’s an updated image of the temperatures statistics for July vs. previous years.

Thursday: Early cloud and a few showers will push north during the morning leaving a day of increasingly sunny skies and much warmer temperatures. Feeling hot and humid by evening. Max 25°C

Friday: A hot day with plenty of sunshine. Cloud arrives by evening with a change beginning out west. Only downside is it will be quite breezy at times. Very humid. Max 30°C

**A baking day on Friday. Somewhere in the UK could see 35°C – impressive for a short-lived hot spell**

Weekend: Cooler but not too bad

Saturday: Cooler weather will arrive from the west and with it some cloud and a few localised showers. Sunny spells developing later and breezy. Max 19°C

Sunday: Sunny spells and most places dry but a few scattered showers can’t be ruled out. Max 19°C

Outlook: Unfortunately, unsettled weather will return.

A poor July continues – Thursday 23rd July 2020 – Sunday 26th July 2020

Hi all,

No let-up in this grim summer month. Notably, the temperatures have really struggled. I posted the below on Twitter this week and it’s clear to see how disappointing July has been so far.

Thursday: Cloudy with pulses of showery rain coming in from the west. Quite warm considering. Max 18°C

Friday: If you can, take advantage of a breather from the cloud and rain. A decent day is in store with warm sunny spells. Remember sun-cream as UV levels are still high. Max 19°C

Weekend: Low pressure arrives

Saturday: Rain welcomes the start of the weekend, moving west to east. Bright spells and showers follow. Breezy. Max 18°C

Sunday: Bright spells and scattered showers. Again a little breezy. Max 17°C

Outlook: Changeable with showery rain at times. No sign of anything very warm or hot on the horizon. Sad times.

A little warmer with some sunny spells – Thursday 16th July 2020 – Sunday 19th July 2020

Well last week’s weather forecast didn’t go to plan, as high pressure failed to establish itself over the UK for the second weekend running. July is turning out to be a disappointment.

Thursday: A cloudy and generally overcast day throughout but it looks like staying dry, quite humid and warmer with light winds. Chance of some breaks in the cloud later. Max 18°C

Friday: Bright spells developing and feeling pleasant but a little humid. Warmest day of this forecast. Max 21°C

Weekend: Some rain.

Saturday: Any brightness fading as cloud thickens from the northwest. A weakening cold front will bring some patchy rain. Not much rain as the front breaks up as it moves through an area of high pressure. Bright spells later. Max 17°C

Sunday: Brighter with sunny spells. Breezy and fresher for all. Max 18°C

Outlook: Warm at first with some dry weather and sunny spells. From midweek, it looks like high pressure will slip away as low pressure closes in on Scotland. In between we will become breezy and mostly cloudy with a risk of some rain at times.

Drier and Warmer Weather to return but for how long – Thursday 9th July 2020 – Sunday 12th July 2020

The weather is certainly misbehaving and we are definitely suffering now after enjoying a lovely April and May. But, there is some hope on the horizon.

Thursday: Cloudy with light rain or showers continuing for most of the morning. Slowly drier into the afternoon. Max 16°C

Friday: Sunny spells and a heavy shower or two developing, especially so in the east. Max 16°C

Weekend: At last. Much improved compared to recent weekends. Light winds.

Saturday: High pressure is set to build across the UK from the southwest. So the weather will become settled with light winds and bright spells developing but some of us could keep some stubborn cloud. Cool overnight. Max 17°C

Sunday: Sunny spells here and there and feeling warmer after a fresh start. Max 20°C

⚠️ UV levels still high so wear sun-cream.

Outlook: Quite hopeful that high pressure will stay in charge for a few days of the week ahead; so some warm bright/sunny spells and temperatures into the 20s. Question mark over midweek as to whether the high pressure slips back away to the southwest and thicker cloud topples in from the northwest or not.

Meh. June might have had a brief ‘heatwave’ and reached 30°C but it delivered a lot of rain, 170% of the monthly average, mostly coming from thundery downpours, and overall was disappointing. Here’s July and although it’s a new month, there’s little change in our weather for now…..

As always at this time of the year when sunny – HIGH UV LEVELS – Wear sun-cream.

Thursday: Rain to start, pushing away to the south and turning showery. Bright spells later and drier towards evening. Max 18°C

Friday: Cloud thickening throughout the day with rain slowly spreading in, with some heavy bursts. Becoming windy with extensive hill-fog. Max 16°C

Weekend: Still unsettled.

**Low pressure drives the weekend weather**

Saturday: A band of rain moving southeast to be replaced by a few showers and the odd bright spell. Breezy. Max 17°C

Sunday: A windy day with scattered showers and some bright or sunny spells in between. Max 18°C

Outlook: It looks like high pressure will slowly edge in from the southwest (just) settling the weather down. So drier and brighter with sunny spells breaking out as the week progresses. Temperatures a little disappointing at first but then recovering to around 20°C towards the end of the week. With areas of rain to the northwest we might see some breezy days but we will live with that after recent conditions.
