Thursday 16th March 2017 – Sunday 19th March 2017

Hi all,

Halfway through March and no sign of a late-winter chill or snowfall just yet. However, after a reasonably bright and mild few days, it will be cooler and wetter towards and over the weekend.

Thursday: High pressure slips away into Europe allowing a weak weather front to come in from the west. A cloudy day with some rain, especially on higher ground and later in the afternoon. Breezy. Max 11°C

Friday: The Atlantic influences our weather over the coming days. Another cloudy one on Friday with rain at times spreading in from the west on a freshening wind making it feel much cooler. Max 8°C

Little change into the weekend.

A windy Saturday & Sunday with 35-40mph gusts

Saturday: Early rain clears then sunny spells and showers. It will be cool and quite windy at times with 35mph gusts. A little milder but not that noticeable. Max 10°C

A wet weekend at times – not very Spring-like

Sunday: Cloudy with some more rain at times and again a brisk, westerly wind possibly gusting to 40mph. Max 12°C

Looking ahead: A little cooler with rain easing away to give some drier and more settled days but with some chilly nights.

Hi,

We’ve actually had a couple of reasonable days this week with the recent heavy rain coming overnight last night and tomorrow sees the sunshine continue. 

Thursday: Dry with sunny spells throughout the day. Windy at first but this easing. Feeling pleasant into the afternoon. Max 11°C

Friday: A cloudy day with some hill-fog and rain at times. Most of the rain will be patchy with some drier spells in between. Likely to be drizzly most of the day on the hills. Max 11°C

Saturday: Showery rain likely during the morning but some brighter, drier spells for later in the day. Breezy. Max 10°C

Cooler as the weekend goes on after a mild few days


Sunday: Rain will come in from the west then turn showery and introduce cooler air with some sunny spells. Max 9°C

Looking ahead: Little change at first with similar temperatures and some showery rain. Later in the week perhaps a few days of drying conditions.

Hi all,

Winter has gone, meteorologically-speaking of course, but we all know we tend to see snow in March at some point, so don’t unpack the garden furniture just yet. Speaking of snow, there could be some overnight on Wednesday with up to 7cm possible above 300M. See Twitter for updates.

Rain likely to turn to snow Wednesday night.


Thursday: Cloudy with rain, sleet and snow during the morning. Drier into the afternoon with some brightness. Breezy too making it feel cold. Some more rain late-evening. Max 7°C

Friday: Some drier, bright spells during the day, but later cloud will thicken with a risk of more rain coming up from the southwest. A cold breeze. Max 7°C

Saturday: A messy picture on Saturday as low pressure from the south swings up another weather front which could stall over the region bringing a wet day with rain at times. There is some uncertainty how far north it gets so watch for updates on my Twitter, @ChadWeather. Max 6°C

Sunday: I’m hoping a little ridge of high pressure builds for Sunday so we have a drier day with some brightness. Temperatures remaining similar values.  Max 7°C

Looking ahead: Temperatures around average, bright spells but also a lot of cloud which will limit the frost-risk. Some showers.

Hi all,

The final blog of winter 16/17 and what a disappointment it has been, when it comes to proper cold and snow. However, even though March is classed as Spring, I expect it will throw some cold spells at us with some snow before we feel the Spring warmth that we’ve all been waiting for.

Before all that, Storm Doris, and with her, an AMBER weather warning which is not that common, even during winter. The storm is yet to form. It will be developing quickly as it approaches and crosses the UK. At the time of publishing these are the warnings: Yellow and Amber Weather Warnings.

Thursday: Be aware that there could be disruptive weather with some structural damage. The day will dawn quite ‘calm’ with what’s to come, with some rain moving in from the west. The rain will become heavy and from mid-morning the winds will increase quickly. Widely we can expect gusts to 50mph. There will be a spell of windier conditions, where we could locally see 60mph gusts and perhaps up to 80mph in exposed places. These gusts are strong enough to damage property and uproot trees. The strongest gusts are expected to be between 11am-3pm but times may vary so watch out for updates on Twitter. As the storm moves through, the winds will turn northwesterly and introduce colder air, so don’t be surprised to see some sleet or snow from mid-afternoon onwards. This is more likely to fall on higher ground (above 300M) and on the Pennines where there will be a few inches. Although it will become less windy into the evening, we can still expect gusts to 40mph. Overnight, further wintry showers with possible hail and feeling colder. Max 9°C which will be during the morning.

Friday: A much quieter day. Once you have found your garden furniture, we can expect some showers early on but then drying up and remaining mostly cloudy with less wind. Further rain overnight. Max 6°C

Saturday: Early rain will move through but some blustery showers will follow on behind. Another spell of windy weather with gusts to 35-40mph. Milder. Max 10°C

Sunday: It should be a fine start with some bright spells. Cloud thickening later on as another low pressure comes in with some rain and breezy conditions. Max 9°C

Looking ahead: Next week will start cooler with some showers. The rest of the week will see it slowly turn milder as the weather settles down. Drier conditions favourable but a lot of cloud once more. Let’s hope March sees a decent snowfall before we close the door on Winter 16/17.

Thursday 26th May 2016 – Bank Holiday Monday 30th May 2016

Hi all,

Heatwave on the way? Nope. However, it is looking generally settled from the weekend so not a washout.

After a miserable Wednesday, we hang onto this set-up into the first half of Thursday with plenty of cloud around and some drizzle or light rain. Low-cloud over the hilltops too. It should be a little milder than yesterday and it will generally dry up into the evening. Max 14°C.

Bright spells around on Friday and feeling warm in any sunshine. The warmth might trigger an afternoon shower or two, otherwise dry. Max 17°C.

Another extended 3-day weekend :). Always nice and the weather is going to be reasonably well-behaved.

During Saturday high pressure will be sitting just to our north bringing settled conditions. Sunny spells and temperatures around average. With the sun strong at this time of the year it will feel pleasant enough. Don’t forget that sun-cream. Max 18°C.

Little change into Sunday. Bright or sunny spells and winds should generally be light. The reason we aren’t warming up into the hot category with this settled weather around, is because we have the wind coming from the north-east. Low risk of an isolated shower into the evening. Max 18°C.

Thundery downpours close by on Bank Holiday Monday as they develop towards our E and SE

The high pressure slips away slightly into Bank Holiday Monday but the likelihood is that we stay dry with sunny spells but just increase the shower-risk. Most of the showers will be in the east and south-east of the UK but we can’t rule out a heavy downpour, possibly thundery, later in the day. Max 19°C.

At the moment the rest of the week looks settled with high pressure close by. No heatwave yet, but certainly some pleasant conditions and a lot of dry weather. If winds turn to come from the south-east then we could import some warmer air from the Continent.

Thursday 19th May 2016 – Sunday 22nd May 2016

Hi all,

We’ve had a decent May so far, with some warm sunshine, a few calm, chilly nights and mainly dry conditions. In fact we’ve only recorded 13mm of rain this month but this total is set to rise as we enter a few unsettled days.

A chilly and misty or locally foggy start to Thursday, but once this lifts the sun should break through the clouds and a reasonable few hours ahead. Cloud will thicken later though with rain expected late-afternoon and into the evening. Feeling warm and a little muggy. Max 17°C.

A bit of a repeat performance on Friday. Bright spells for the morning and early afternoon so feeling pleasant and not a bad day. Cloud will increase and the wind picks up as showers arrive into the evening. Some of these could be heavy before general rain arrives. So if you’re off out for the Whit Friday celebrations pack something waterproof for late on. Max 16°C.

Plenty of weather fronts from the Atlantic over the coming days keeping us unsettled

It’s a bit of a complex picture as we go into the weekend. A unseasonal low pressure is set to swing in from the southwest Friday night introducing windy conditions for a time and a spell of heavy rain on into Saturday. This will clear quickly to bright spells and showers later. Feeling cool in the fresh wind. Max 16°C.

It’s the Manchester 10k on Sunday and the wife is taking part, so it means I’ll be dodging the showers which will be heavy. Don’t be surprised to see some hail again with thunder and lightning. The bright spells in between the showers will offer some respite. A little cooler. Max 14°C.

Looking ahead into next week and there were some signs of the weather settling down and becoming very warm as high pressure built. This still looks likely, but perhaps delayed until later in the week or towards the end of the month. Otherwise, it will remain showery with temperatures around average.

Hi all,

Finally we’ve had our first taste of Spring, well in fact some days felt like summer with a high of 24°C. With UV levels at 6, my tan is coming along nicely. However, cooler weather is on the way.

Thursday will be a decent day after two days of cooler, cloudier conditions. Although slightly breezy, sunny spells are expected and it will be warm. Make the most of it. Max 20°C.

All change as we go into Friday. A bright start then a cold front spreads down from the north introducing a band of cloud and behind it colder air. Generally dry but notably cooler. Max 13°C.

I can promise a settled but chilly weekend which isn’t such bad news. Where we do get some sunshine it won’t feel too bad and despite the cold, the sun is still strong and with a UV of 6. Grab a coat and tan that face :).

A cold start to Saturday with a chance of some localised frost. The day will be dry with bright spells and cool. Pleasant in any sunshine. Max 12°C.

Very little change into Sunday, sunny spells, chilly early and late. Light northwesterly winds and at least it will be dry. Max 12°C.

Looking ahead to next week and it will be dry to start but then showers are expected as well as a slow rise in the temperatures and back up to the late teens.

Thursday 5th May 2016 – Sunday 8th May 2016

Hi all,

From snow a week ago, to some welcome Spring warmth. The beauty of the British weather.

Thursday will be a decent day across the region with warm sunny spells breaking out. Some of the sunshine is likely to turn hazy later on but it will be dry throughout. Feeling very nice and temperatures will respond. Sunshine levels are now showing a UV level of 5 to 6 so sun cream needed if you’re out and about. Max 18°C.

Little change into Friday. Another warm day and with the winds coming from the south-east, the humidity will start to rise slightly. Another dry day with some hazy sunny spells. Max 19°C.

As we enter the weekend it does become a little tricky to forecast where we might see thunderstorms.

Saturday and Sunday will both be very warm days with some sunny spells. We are now in the humid air from the near Continent and this will increase the risk of some heavy, and possibly thundery showers to break out. Hard to forecast where and when, but something to bear in mind. A good chance we will see a Max of 21°C widely this weekend, maybe even a localised 23°C. Can’t grumble!

Looking ahead, it will remain very warm into next week with pleasant sunny spells and the odd shower early on. It is set to turn cooler and fresher from midweek though, as winds turn back to a more westerly direction but still pleasant enough.

Hi all,

Yes it’s nearly May, yes the Bank Holidays are coming, yes it is still cold, so where is the warm weather? The search continues…….

Another Arctic blast of cold air gave some wintry showers this week with plenty of hail, sleet and even snow showers peppering the region but as we head into this forecast, the northerly air supply is set to be cut off as the weather pattern changes.

It will be a cold start on Thursday and as well as a frost in places there is a risk of some localised sleet or snow around, especially above 200M. This will ease away quickly to give a dry slot with bright spells. The cloud will increase into the afternoon and into the evening and overnight there will be some rain with a chance of this turning to sleet and snow on the hills. One to watch and a late bite from the current cold spell. Max 8°C.

The low pressure bringing the rain, sleet and snow will be in charge of the weather on Friday. A cold windy day with further wintry showers which will tend to turn more to rain as the day progresses. Max 8°C.

The good news about the weekend is that temperatures will start to recover and we will get a reasonable day out of it.

A chilly start on Saturday with a ground frost, but hopefully a good day ahead with plenty of sunny spells and mainly dry conditions. We’d be very unlucky to catch a shower but with the ridge of high pressure only weak, they can’t be ruled out. Slightly milder and with the sunshine’s UV levels now at 5 it will feel pleasant. Max 11°C.

All change on Sunday. The Atlantic returns as cloud thickens from the west bringing outbreaks of rain, some heavy. Max 10°C.

As for Bank Holiday Monday it looks showery, as do the following few days, with temperatures slowly returning to normal. It looks likely that another cold spell won’t arrive, ruling out the chance of any snow in May! That’s my thinking anyway! 🙂

Long-range there is a sign of some warmth, week commencing the 9th of May, especially later on in the week, with temperatures getting close to, or into the 20s. Watch this space.

Hi all,

It’s a late blog today because I’ve spent the day enjoying the warmest day of the so far with some strong Spring sunshine. Is it going to continue? Of course not. No more topless sunbathing for me!

Thursday will be a dry day and again warm with plenty of sunny spells. The sunshine will tend to turn hazy later on as high-cloud arrives. Max 15°C.

A change as we go into Friday. It promises to be a cloudier day with some bright spells but the temperature will be much lower as we’ve picked up a north-easterly breeze. Feeling chilly and just maybe some light rain later on. Max 10°C.

Another cold Arctic plunge this weekend and the cold lasts into next week

It will turn even colder as we enter the weekend. High pressure builds to our west, low pressure to the east and this allows another cold Arctic feed of air to develop over the country. Similar has occurred recently. It is a set-up we wanted back in late-winter to bring us the snow we all (well me!) wanted.

Both Saturday and Sunday will be cold with a keen north to north-westerly wind. Bright or sunny spells are expected but also some showers, which could, at times, give some hail or sleet or wet-snow to higher ground. A big contrast to earlier in the week. The nights will also become cold with frosts returning. Max 8-9°C.
