Hi all,

There’s been a lot of talk for a few days now, about colder weather on the way. I mentioned last week that winter wasn’t finished with us just yet and looking at the computer models parts of the UK could be in for some significant snow and bitterly cold temperatures as we enter next week. Deep cold will be dragged across Europe on an easterly wind, sometimes called The Beast From The East, into the UK from Siberia and the recent SSW (Sudden Stratospheric Warming) is to blame. This is still not 100% guaranteed though, after this morning’s updates from the computer models, but it is still favoured.

I’ve seen some models give us days of subzero temperatures, even during the daytime. I just feel we need another day or so to firm up details on how cold it will get and how much, if any, snow will fall. It does seem likely that from Friday our ‘feels like’ temperature will remain sub-zero for several days. Keep up-to-date by following my tweets on Twitter.

Thursday: Dry with variable amounts of cloud. Some patchy frost to start then a day of mostly cloudy skies and some bright spells coming and going. Max 6°C

Friday: Frosty early and more sunshine on offer and with it plenty of dry weather. You will start to feel the edge on that breeze as the colder air from Europe arrives. Max 5°C

Weekend: Dry and slowly even colder. A biting wind-chill.

Saturday: A frost to start then dry with sunny spells. A keen wind-chill as the easterly wind picks up, gusting to 25mph. Max 5°C

Sunday: Windy, with bright spells but more cloud compared to Saturday so feeling colder. The bitter wind-chill digging in, making it feel more like -7°C. Max 3°C

Into next week and we could be seeing temperatures 6-8°C below average (av. Max = 7°C)

Outlook: Even colder air will arrive from the east and with it the increasing chance of some snow flurries. Daytime temperatures will struggle to get above freezing and frosts will continue at night. As we approach midweek there is some uncertainty as to whether we keep the very cold easterlies or switch to slightly less cold northerlies. The risk of snow is likely to increase too. Some computer models predict the colder-than-average conditions to continue into the second week of March, but some have us back in milder southwesterlies by March the 6th. Just to note: One set-up has some heavy snow for us around the 3rd of March with night-time temperatures as low as -10°C. A long way off but just a hint of what might be possible with the forthcoming very cold airmass.

Hi,

Only a couple of weeks left of winter and recently we’ve felt its presence with some more snowfall and cold temperatures, but, change is on the way. However, don’t be thinking of putting away those thick coats just yet, as winter might not be done with, after the recent Sudden Stratospheric Warming event.

Thursday: A reasonable day with some bright spells and milder than recently. There will be the odd wintry shower and a fresh breeze. Max 7°C

Friday: Dry with sunny spells and feeling pleasant. Max 8°C

Weekend: Mostly dry with light winds as pressure builds.

Saturday and Sunday: Mostly cloudy with some bright spells. Feeling quite mild. Just the risk of some drizzle in any thicker cloud, especially on hilltops. Max 9-10°C

High pressure in charge next week so a lot of overdue drier weather on the way

Outlook: High pressure in charge and at first the position of the high will lead to mild and settled conditions. As the week progresses the high could well slip north and introduce cold, then very cold, easterly winds. Initially the focus will be on it feeling bitter but with a lot of dry and overcast weather.

Hi all,

January is coming to a close and with just a month left of winter, who’s looking forward to Spring and those lighter mornings and evenings? I know I am, but I’m still hoping for some more snow before we get there.

Thursday: Cold with bright or sunny spells and windy. Just the chance of an isolated wintry shower during the morning mainly in western areas. Max 5°C

Friday: A cold and frosty start then a reasonable day with sunny spells and a chilly wind. Cloudier later in the day. Max 5°C

Weekend: Chance of snow

Rain arriving from the west on Saturday could turn to snow

Saturday: A very cold day. Cloudy with rain pushing in from the west. Snow is possible on higher ground (mostly >200M) but not exclusively. So, with a chance of snow to lower-levels, watch out for updates on Twitter. Later into the evening we return to a few wintry showers. Max 3°C

Sunday: A return to the brighter weather with a cold wind and sunny spells. The odd wintry shower possible in eastern areas. Max 5°C

Outlook: Remaining cold throughout with bright spells, slight frosts and some wintry showers. Tuesday/Wednesday could see a band of rain which could turn to snow in places. One to watch.

Hi all,

I hope you all had a great Christmas and have managed to return to feeling less stuffed. So it wasn’t a White Christmas here but we did see some snow on the higher routes on Boxing Day morning. As you’ve probably seen, we missed out on another snow event last night as a band of heavy rain mixed with the cold air further south and brought chaos to some of the motorway and road networks. When will it be our turn?

Thursday: A cold and frosty start for most but there is a chance that we could see a few sleet or snow showers earlier in the morning which might give a dusting in places. A nice day will follow with plenty of winter sunshine. A slight breeze making it feel bitter. Max 3°C

Friday: Change on the way. Cloud and light rain, perhaps preceded by snow for a few hours, will move in quickly from the west. The snow may settle briefly especially on the hills and Pennines. After a drier slot further rain will arrive later and with it milder air. Max 6°C

Weekend: Milder and windy.

Saturday: Windy with some showers and drier spells in between. Mostly cloudy and notably milder. Max 10°C

New Year’s Eve: Staying windy with gusts to 40mph and after a spell of rain showers will follow. Remaining mild but feeling colder with the wind. Be prepared for some rain into the evening and around midnight but don’t let it dampen your celebrations. Max 9°C

Outlook: Staying lively as the Jet Stream gathers pace, with rain and windy spells at times. Mostly mild but colder spells in between low pressure systems.

Hi all,

Apologies for the delay today I’ve been exploring the Manchester Christmas Markets and of course the food and beer. So then, a lot of hype this week about colder weather coming and whether it will snow or not and if yes, then how much and where, etc. etc. Interesting times ahead, tricky forecasting times ahead and one thing for sure, cold times ahead. Brrrrr.

Thursday: Storm Caroline brings early heavy, perhaps squally rain, which clears quickly. It will be windy and after a very mild start it will become colder and colder. Sunny spells will arrive with the Arctic air then showers will get going later into the afternoon which will start to turn wintry. Later in the evening and overnight sleet and snow showers will push down from the northwest on a stiff, bitterly cold wind. Don’t be surprised to see a covering of snow on Friday morning. Max 11°C occurring in the morning falling to 6°C by mid-afternoon.

Friday: Sleet and snow showers will become confined to western parts and most of us will enjoy some sunshine. It will feel very cold with a significant wind-chill. Max 2°C but feeling more like -3°C. Frost settling in overnight.

Weekend: Plenty of sunshine then a chance of snow.

Saturday: Frosty early and late with sunny spells during the day. Just a chance of a wintry shower to the west where it could be cloudier. Max 4°C

A chance of snow arriving from the southwest on Sunday but details far from certain

Sunday: A forecasters’ nightmare at the moment and be aware things could change. The current model output suggests a dry start but very cold with temperatures close to freezing. Rain coming in from the west or southwest towards midday will engage with the cold air and turn to snow. Some heavy snow looks possible but details at this stage are not certain, i.e. the band of rain/snow could stay away further south, so look out for further updates this week on Twitter. Low-lying areas (under 100M) more prone to sleet but travel disruption could occur in locations above this height. Max 2°C

Outlook: It will remain cold or very cold for the foreseeable with night frosts. There is another chance of snow on Thursday but again details can only be firmed up nearer the time. The cold spell is here to stay.

So to summarise we have a good chance of some snow Thursday into early Friday and also on Sunday.

Thursday 30th November 2017 – Sunday 3rd December 2017

Hi all,

We saw our first snowfall of the winter last week…. well actually no, it was our first snow-cover of autumn. Yes, it is still autumn, despite the cold and it’s been a wet (only 4 dry days) end to November but winter will finally be here, meteorologically-speaking, on Friday!

On Saturday, it’s time for the annual Saddleworth Santa Dash and Switch On! But will the weather be kind?

Thursday:  Dry with plenty of sunshine but still very cold after a severe-frost to start where rurally temperatures will have been close to -7°C. During the day the breeze will bring a sub-zero windchill. A frost will return overnight. Max 3°C

Friday:  Some sunny spells at times, especially early on. A frosty start again but with more cloud-cover not as cold as Thursday morning. Less in the way of clear skies overnight means any frost will be patchy. Slightly milder. Max 4°C

Weekend: Slightly milder with cloudy skies and some patchy rain. No frosts.

Saturday:  Cloudy with some patchy rain, not everywhere seeing some, turning less cold. Max 6°C

Sunday:  A similar picture with limited brightness and plenty of cloud. Not wet everywhere just some patches of drizzle especially on higher ground. Temperatures around average.  Max 9°C

Outlook: Mild and cloudy on Monday and early Tuesday, then colder air with some brighter skies will return. For now, no snow on the horizon which will disappoint all those Daily Express believers.

Hi all,

Yep the media are still at it. Anyone got their sledges out? Nope. The weather does have a chill about it, already, but it is anyone’s guess what winter will bring.

Thursday: A cloudy start with milder air back again across the region. Some rain likely in the morning but patchy in nature. This will ease away and some bright spells will break out and lead to a drier afternoon. Max 11°C

Friday: A cloudy and breezy day with bright spells and some showers especially so in the morning. A band of rain moving through overnight. Max 10°C

Weekend: Cold, especially in the wind.

Saturday: A northwesterly airflow will take hold over the UK this weekend and it will feel cold. We’ll see some brightness on Saturday, but also some showers blown in on that keen breeze. Max 9°C

Sunday: A drier day is expected with sunny spells and a few lingering showers. Remaining cold with a frost likely overnight as skies clear. Max 9°C

Outlook: Slowly becoming less cold and cloudier after a decent Monday. Temperatures close or just below average. No sign of any snowfall or any named-storm on the horizon. We could become stuck under a cloudy-high, which means little sunshine but very settled conditions.

Hi all,

Winter is still on the horizon but after a frost this week and a chilly outlook, it will be here sooner, rather than later. A lot of media stories this week; “Coldest Winter in 11 years” etc. etc. Just ignore them. It’s complete guesswork. No-one knows what this winter will bring. Got to love their annual BS.

Thursday: A mostly cloudy start with a risk of some patchy rain moving through but it will soon clear to leave a decent day with plenty of sunny spells and dry. Good news for those off to the Big Bang at Oldham Edge in the evening. Max 12°C

Friday: Cloudy with some light rain or drizzle dotted about especially so into the evening. Some bright spells can’t be ruled out in the odd sheltered location during the morning. Rain overnight. Max 11°C

Saturday: Any early morning rain clearing then colder with bright spells and showers which could fall as hail. Feeling cold in a gusty northwesterly wind. Max 9°C

Sunday: Bright spells after a chilly start. Risk of some showers on the keen breeze but these should ease as the day progresses. Remaining cold with temperatures just below average and a frost likely overnight. Max 9°C

Outlook for the rest of next week: High pressure builds from the west, so plenty of dry, settled weather. Not bad during daylight hours with light winds and sunny spells. Some patchy frost and fog overnight. Just one exception is Tuesday where we could have a narrowing band of rain and wind sweep through quickly.

Hi all,

Autumn continues to live up to its name as we experienced some wild weather earlier this week. Ex-Hurricane Ophelia (Bizarre Storm) arrived as forecast but we escaped the worst. Chadderton recorded a 44mph gust but generally across the region it was 50-55mph with 70mph along the coast. What was unusual was it wasn’t hammering down with rain. Once morning-showers moved away, some lightning was recorded near Bury, then the day turned very strange indeed. I had noticed a weird ‘light’ on the way to work and soon the sky was filled with rolling cloud that looked very smoke-like and a glowing red sun. Ex-Ophelia’s southerly winds had pushed smoke particles from the Portuguese/Spanish wildfires and Saharan Sand northwards (Red Sun Phenomenon).

As you know we have named-storms and we are currently on ‘B’ as we had Aileen in September. The reason Ophelia wasn’t Brian was because she was already named and since she kept her strength, she remained named the same, even though an ex-Hurricane, as she arrived on our shores.

Storm Brian could well be here quicker than you think……

Thursday: A lot of cloud around but with some bright spells during the day after a misty start. With light winds it will feel pleasant and mild. However, the breeze will pick up later in the day with a risk of some showery rain developing especially to the south and east. Max 16°C

Friday: Fronts will arrive from the west, so a spell of rain which will be followed by brighter conditions and some showers. Breezy and fresher. Max 13°C

Weekend: Poor. Wet and very windy.

Storm Brian this weekend?

 

Saturday: A deep area of low pressure will have been forming out west on the Jet Stream and this system could well be named as Storm Brian. At the moment the strongest winds (70mph gusts) look to be heading to Southern Britain, but the track is still uncertain so watch tweets for updates. Currently, it will be a wet day with rain, heavy at times and windy with 40mph gusts. Feeling cold. Max 13°C

Sunday: The ‘storm’ will move into the North Sea but will introduce cold north-easterly winds and with it frequent showers which could be thundery. Remaining windy with gusts possible to 45mph during showers. Max 12°C

Outlook: Remaining unsettled with some spells of wind and rain broken up by some drier slots. Temperatures around or just above average.

Hi all,

I’m back from a superb golfing holiday in Spain. If you missed the photos, the weather was amazing. Four days of 27-30°C and plenty of sunshine. Remind me again why I live in the UK. 😦 At least we will see some warmer air in time for the weekend.

Thursday: After a poor Wednesday, a much better day with plenty of sunny spells after a chilly start. Cloud will bubble up during the day but it will remain dry with lighter winds. Fresher. Max 15°C

Friday: That warmer air mass starts to arrive but with it rain at times on a keen southwesterly wind. There will be some drier slots. Muggy. Max 18°C

Weekend: Warm and not too much rain about.

Saturday: Generally cloudy with a risk of drizzle or light rain on coasts and hills to start. Hilltops could be misty or covered in low-cloud. As the day progresses it should dry up with some localised brightness and feeling warm for the time of year. Max 19°C

Sunday: Drier with bright spells at times. Still feeling warm with southerly winds especially in any sunshine. I have lots of BBQ food left…… hmmmmm. Max 19°C

Above average temps: Warmer air ahead of ex-Hurricane Ophelia, cooler air behind it

Outlook: The remnants of Hurricane Ophelia, located to the southwest of the UK, may bring further warm air up from the south on Monday. With sunny spells on offer, temperatures could be close to 21°C. The rest of the coming days will be cooler and mostly cloudy before rain and wind returns.
